Je m'exprime ici à titre personnel, en tant qu'un des dirigeants d'Alternative Libérale, mais pas au nom d'Alternative Libérale.

Je crois que lorsque l'on s'engage en politique, au-delà des considérations tactiques et partisanes, à titre collectif, ou, à défaut, personnel, il faut choisir, tout le temps, sur un mode binaire, au mieux entre ce qui est bon et ce qui est mauvais, à défaut entre ce qui est bien et ce qui est moins bien, et, au pire, entre ce qui est mauvais et ce qui est pire.

Nous nous trouvons, à la veille du second tour, dans ce dernier cas de figure. Le programme de Nicolas Sarkozy, du point de vue d'un libéral atlantiste et humaniste, est assez mauvais et à même empiré au fur et à mesure de la campagne électorale. Je ne m'étendrai pas sur l'étalage de déclarations catalogue, démagogiques et populistes, qu'il s'agisse de "renforcer l'Europe pour lutter contre les effets pervers de la mondialisation", de la lutte contre les "patrons-voyous", de la multiplication des "droits à" opposables, et, horreur suprême à mes yeux, de la décision récente de rapatrier nos Forces Spéciales d'Afghanistan.

Mais réfléchissons une seconde---une seule, pas plus, nous perdrions notre temps: Madame Royal fait-elle mieux ? Non, elle fait pire, à tous les niveaux: sur le plan de la politique intérieure, son catalogue de promesses catégorielles revient à distribuer la manne que le Dieu-Etat ne possède plus, ou à distribuer de la brioche quand Versailles n'a même plus de pain. Sur le plan de la politique étrangère, et bien, par courtoisie, je préfère rester silencieux.

Alors le choix est simple, c'est un choix entre assez mauvais et bien pire.

Dimanche prochain, sans aucun complexe et sans hésitation, je choisis le mauvais candidat, je choisis Nicolas Sarkozy.

Et après tout, comme dans le pari de Pascal, peut-être serai-je positivement surpris... Lui, au moins, le temps de quelques semaines, le temps pour les conservateurs de tous bords de rassembler dans les rues quelques millions d'aveugles nostalgiques allergiques au changement, va sans doute essayer de redresser la France qui tombe.

Sarkozy: Reagan ou bluff ? Je paie pour voir.

Why I will vote for Nicolas Sarkozy

I hereby write in my own name and as Board Member of Alternative Libérale, but not in the name of Alternative Libérale.

I believe that once you enter the political field, beyond all tactical considerations, you have a moral duty to choose---in the name of your own organization or by default in your own name---between, at best, what is good and bad, by default, what is good and not that good, and, at worst, what is bad and worse.

We are confronted to this "bad or worse" scenario just a few days before the second round of the French presidential elections. From a classical-liberal, pro-Westerner and compassionate perspective, the political platform of Nicolas Sarkozy looks relatively bad, and even got worse through the course of the presidential campaign. I will not describe the catalog of demagogic and even populist declarations that were made by the candidate in the last few weeks, from the "re-enforcement of Europe to fight globalization", to the fight against the "scum-entrepreneurs" and the multiplication of the famous "rights to something tangible" (the so called French "real rights"---in a Marxist spirit---opposed to the formal rights such as freedom of speech and religion or property rights), through---supreme horror to me---the recent decision to repatriate our troops from Afghanistan.

Now just let's think a minute about it---not more, we would waste our time: is Segolène Royal doing a better job ? No, she is doing worse, at all levels. On internal policy issues, her catalog of promises amounts to distribute Government money that the Government does not own any more (or, to twist Marie-Antoinette's famous words, "to distribute brioche" when Versailles does not even have bread). On foreign policy, well, to remain polite, I prefer to keep silent.

Then the choice is simple: it's a choice between relatively bad and really worse.

On Sunday, without any hesitation, I will choose the bad candidate, I will vote for Nicolas Sarkozy.

And, who knows... Maybe, reasoning like Pascal in his XVIIth Century "wager", I will be positively surprised. At least Sarkozy might try, during the few weeks after his elections, to reform a failing France. Not long, however, just the time for liberals from all sides to unite together and mount massive street demonstrations of millions of nostalgic remnants of the old, collapsing "French social model".

Sarkozy: Reagan or bluff ? I'll pay to see.
